About this culture

Blue oyster is one of the fastest and most forgiving gourmet species, with caps that open steel blue and fade to gray as they mature. Each syringe holds live blue oyster mycelium in sterile nutrient broth, ready to expand onto grain or agar.

What’s included

  • One 10 cc liquid culture syringe
  • One sterile hypodermic needle
  • One alcohol swab

How to use it

  • Grain: inoculate sterilized grain bags at about 5 cc per 3 lb bag, working in front of a flow hood or inside a still air box.
  • Agar: place a drop on a plate first to check the culture and expand it before grain work.
  • Fruiting substrate: blue oyster grows on pasteurized straw, hardwood sawdust or Master’s Mix.

Storage and shelf life

  • Store refrigerated at about 40°F.
  • Use within 4–8 weeks of arrival for best results. Refrigerated cultures keep for 3–6 months.
